Google Business Profile management is the ongoing work of keeping your free Google listing accurate, complete and active, so it can appear in Google Maps and the local pack and turn searchers into calls. NZ Marketing does it for local service businesses nationwide: categories, service areas, hours, photos, posts and a monthly report, and you stay the profile's owner.

What does Google Business Profile management include?
Google builds your listing from what you enter and from other sources: your website, licensed data and edits suggested by the public. Managing it means making each field match your real business and Google's rules, and keeping it that way:
Business name
Your real-world name, as on your signage and website. Added service keywords, locations or taglines are not allowed and can get a profile suspended.
Categories
One primary category plus up to 9 more. Google asks for the fewest, most specific categories that say what the business is, and says your categories affect your local ranking.
Address or service area
A storefront shows its address. A business that travels to customers, such as a plumber or a cleaning service, hides the address and lists the cities, zip codes or areas it serves (Google allows up to 20).
Hours and phone
Regular hours, special hours for holidays and closures, and a primary number under the business's own control.
Business description
Up to 750 characters on what you offer and what sets you apart, with no links and no sales or price promotions.
Photos
Google asks for images that are in focus, well lit and free of heavy filters or AI changes, so they show what a customer will find.
Posts
Updates, offers and events that show on the profile in Search and Maps. Google archives posts older than 6 months unless they carry a date range.
How does Google rank businesses in Maps and the local pack?
Google's help article on local ranking says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Knowing which factor a manager can influence tells you what to expect.
Relevance
is how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed information and the right categories drive it, and it is the factor management changes most directly.
Distance
is how far you are from the searcher, or from where Google thinks they are. Nobody can change it, which is why map results for the same search shift with the searcher's location.
Prominence
is how well known the business is. Google says it draws on information such as how many websites link to the business and how many reviews it has.
A better Google Maps ranking therefore comes from two directions: a strong, current profile for relevance, and links and mentions on other websites, the local SEO work that builds prominence over time.
Can you manage your Google Business Profile yourself?
Yes. The profile costs nothing, and Google's own advice is that it does not take long to learn. The routine part is easy to do yourself: holiday hours, photos from recent jobs, the occasional update. Outside help earns its fee in the work that is easy to get wrong, or easy to let slip:

Category and service area decisions
They shape which searches you appear for, and after a category change Google may ask you to verify the business again.
Changes you did not make
Google updates profiles from other sources. When someone suggests an edit that needs your approval, you have 4 days to accept or reject it, after which Google may publish it if other public information, such as your website, supports it.
Guideline problems
A keyword in the name, a virtual office as the address or a second profile for the same business all break Google's guidelines and put the listing at risk.
If you have the time, use the checklist above. If the profile keeps falling to the bottom of your list, that is the case for a manager.
How our Google Business Profile management works
Access, with you as owner
You add us as a manager in your profile's People and access settings. Google's manager role can edit the profile but cannot add or remove users or delete it, and an owner can change a manager's access at any time. If the profile is unverified or its owner is unknown, we start with verification or an ownership request.
Audit
We compare the profile, field by field, with your real business and Google's guidelines; you get the list of what is wrong or missing before anything changes.
Fix the foundation
We correct the name and categories, set the address or service area to how you actually work, fill the gaps and write a description that says what you do and where. If an edit is likely to trigger verification again, we tell you before we make it.
Photos and posts
We add photos of your real jobs, team and premises that you share with us, not stock images, and publish posts on a regular schedule.
Keep watch
We check for Google updates, suggested edits and rejected changes, so the listing keeps saying what you approved.
Report monthly
You get the numbers from Google's performance report, with a short note on what we changed and why.
What you get with NZ Marketing
Categories and areas chosen for the work you want
We set the primary category and service areas around the jobs you want more of and the places you actually serve, inside Google's guidelines, instead of listing everything you could possibly do.
One story across Google
Your profile, website and ads should give the same name, phone number and services. We can keep the site in line through our web design and maintenance team and run your Google Ads management from the same plan.
Plain monthly reporting
Profile views, the search terms people used, calls, direction requests and website clicks, from Google's own performance data. You keep full access to the same numbers and can judge the work yourself.
Leads answered, often in under 60 seconds
The profile's job is to make the phone ring. We can also answer the leads it brings: NZLeads, our own platform, responds by call, text and message, often in under 60 seconds.

Google reviewWhat to watch for when hiring a Google Business Profile manager
Google publishes its own advice on working with third parties who manage profiles, worth reading before you sign with anyone, us included. Its warning signs:
A guaranteed ranking
Third parties cannot promise or directly influence your position in Search or Maps through any special means.
Claiming to work for Google
Ask for the person's name and an email from an @google.com address; without one, Google says they likely do not work for Google.
Threats about your listing
No third party can remove your business from Google or get into your profile without your permission.
Hidden performance data
You have the right to know how many people view, interact with and click on your profile.
Unclear pricing
Get a written agreement listing the services and their costs before work starts.
Google also recommends one third party at a time, because your business appears only once on Google and two managers make results hard to compare. We work the same way: you stay the owner, you see the data, and we do not promise a position.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Google provides the Business Profile at no charge; what a manager charges for is the work. Our fee depends on how many locations you have, the state the profile is in and how much photo and posting work you want.
How do I add an agency as a manager on my Google Business Profile?
Open your Business Profile, select More, then Business Profile settings, then People and access. Select Add, enter the agency's email address, choose Manager under Access and select Invite. Only an owner can send the invite, and the agency signs in with its own Google Account, so you do not need to share your password.
Can you guarantee my business a top spot in the local pack?
No, and nobody honestly can: Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. We make the profile complete, accurate and active, the part you control, and show you the results each month.
How long do changes to my profile take to show on Google?
Google checks edits before they go live, so changes do not appear the moment you save them. Google says approved service area edits can take up to 48 hours to show, and a new category, business name or address can mean verifying the business again.
Do you manage profiles for businesses outside Los Angeles?
Yes. NZ Marketing is a full-service Los Angeles agency serving businesses nationwide, with hundreds of active clients. The work runs through manager access on your profile, so where you are makes no difference to how we manage it.
